Another Shift Right

As you may have heard, Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana lost his primary last night. While Lugar was rarely viewed as a moderate, he was a usually reasonable Republican who could work across the aisle to get things done, and now we will have another Tea Party-type guy in the Senate who will do nothing, except maybe continue the Conservative's war on women. Lucky us.

Lugar's concession speech is definitely worth reading:

  1. It gives me great hope when incumbents get voted out; especially relics like Lugar! He made enough money for himself, his family, his extended family, and his friends. Time for the new guy and his family and friends to get rich off of the tax payers.

Let's see, the new guy is bad for the: war-on-women; war-on-GLBT's; war-on-education; war-on-minorities; war-on-anit-war people; war-on-tax raisers; and the war-on-people who use the hyperbole 'war-on' too much.

He's good for the: war-on-the 2nd amendmant; war-on-unborn babies; war-on-war mongers; war-on-tax cutters; war-on-balanced budgets; war-on-Christians; and the war-on people who call liberals 'socialists' all the time.

Maybe he'll be as successful as other important wars like the war-on-drugs or the war-on-crime or the war-on-terror or the war-on-the English language. Then again, maybe not...

  2. valid points--but let's not our dominant cultural positions as white men distract us from new policies that will have disastrous impacts on other citizens; e.g., a woman being probed against her will while seeking an abortion. I'm sure all of this won't seem hyperbolic to her.

And, remember, the first step is admitting that there is a problem in the first place--most rebuttals from the right begin w/ a disavowal of the identified problem as a problem at all.

Also, I'm not shedding tears for the Dick Lugars losing races--other than the fact of what's replacing him. Don't let perfect be the enemy of the marginally mediocre. In our efforts to fix a faulty system, we can't let the inmates take over.
